UO teapot hybrid series explores new possibilities of Japanese green tea

Design studio UO has created a teapot hybrid series to explore the new possibilities of Japanese green tea. This unique series transforms typical Japanese teapots into different shapes, inviting viewers to imagine new ways to enjoy this widely consumed beverage, such as the way the tea is made, different tastes and styles, and even its meaning.

UO's series shows five different mixtures, each of which studies the function of the teapot in its own way. For example,'teapot E'combines 16 teapots into a circle. Its design encourages users to imagine mixing 16 different types of tea, or even a large tea party with many guests. Its symbolic shape may also be reminiscent of one of the rituals of a shrine.

'The design we think of is not a behavior that arises from your own heart, such as emotion or will. We believe that this is something we are digging deep into and make up for from the "situation" under certain conditions or viewpoints," the Japanese design studio shared. "That's why we always have the question of what to fill in the "situation" Confused, because the'situation' is very unstable and usually consists of multiple dimensions. So we set this'situation' as a'teapot' and focus on it, making the conditions in this project very clear and specific.

Teapot B: Two people teapot

This series is making Japan's most common and common teapot: "Tokoname Yaki". In order to create the hybrid series, the designer took a close look at this classic teapot, then simulated it in 3D and printed it in 3D. In this simple process, "Tokonameyaki" became the object of the UO team's daily processing. After a long period of observation, the designer discovered subtle differences that made the teapot look like it was alive. These subtle differences gave the team an idea for this series.

This art object series was made for the art event "Kakegawa chaennale 2020+1" in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, which is the most famous green tea area. These objects are displayed in 3D in a very old Japanese traditional house as an exhibition venue. Teapot C: Endless Teapot
